Michelle Hawes

Custodial Correctional Officer, Lotus Glen Correctional Centre

I’m part of a team that helps to keep Queensland communities safe.

Originally from New South Wales, Michelle Hawes has called Queensland home for the last 33 years.

When she isn’t exploring the abundance of Far North Queensland, Michelle is ensuring the safety and security of the Lotus Glen Correctional Centre.

“As a Custodial Correctional Officer (CCO), my primary responsibility is the supervision and day-to-day running of a prisoner group within a unit, but my role is very diverse,” says Michelle.

“On any given day, I can wear more than one ‘hat’ depending on a range of issues that may arise.

“For example, I may have prisoners struggling with mental health issues who I support through negotiation and intervention; prisoners who require counselling to support them through grief; prisoners who need assistance filling out forms; and prisoners who need general behavioural guidance to ensure everyone is safe.

“My role can be challenging and confronting, but I do believe I am making a difference to the lives of prisoners’ by treating them how I would like to be treated, by being fair and calm and speaking to them respectfully.

“My career with the Queensland public sector started 10 years ago after spending many years working in non-government organisations supporting women and children experiencing domestic and family violence.

“I am passionate about making a difference in the community, which is one of the reasons I joined the public sector. Queensland Corrective Services has given me job security, great work/life balance and the opportunity to meet some great officers along the way that I now call friends.

“Being a CCO is a rewarding career and one that is strengthened through acquired life experiences, self-control, good decision making, problem solving and interpersonal skills.”

Michelle is here for Queensland to help stop the cycle of re-offending and keep Queensland communities safe.
