Flexible Workplace Program - supported implementation

What is the Flexible Workplace Program – Supported Implementation?

As a part of the Government’s commitment to reducing traffic congestion in Brisbane’s CBD, the Public Service Commission(PSC)is to work in partnership with public sector agencies through the Flexible Workplace Program – Supported Implementation.  This program aims to support agencies to further integrate the flexible work arrangements identified by the Premier in her letter to Ministers in December 2008, these being:

The program focuses on enhancing the capacity and capability of the agency and its workforce to optimise the use of these flexible work options. Through a partnership with the PSC agencies will have access to tailored consultancy, training and resourcing in the key areas that are known to impact positively on flexibility in the workplace. These areas are outlined in the diagram below.

This image is a diagram. The diagram is a circle divided into left and right halves. Each half contains 3 segments. The left half is labelled 'Workforce'. The three segments in this half are the key areas that impact on integrating flexibility into the workforce, they are: Knowledge, Skills, and Practical experience. The right half is labelled 'Agency'. The three segments in this half are the key areas that impact on integrating flexibility into the Agency, they are: Supportive leadership and culture, Quality corporate resources, and Aligned business systems. Curved arrows surround the outer edge of the circle to indicate the interdependence of each key area in a flexible workplace.

Is this program linked to the Department of Transport and Main Road’s Flexible Workplace Program - Brisbane Central Pilot?

Both the Supported Implementation program and the Brisbane Central Pilot are directed towards the goal of reduced urban congestion through maximising the use of flexible work arrangements.

The PSC’s program complements the Department of Transport and Main Road’s Flexible Workplace Program - Brisbane Central Pilot as it supports agencies to use their learning from the pilot through focused consultancy and tailored training and resources.
Whilst this is the case, all public sector agencies, whether they participated in the pilot or not, can nominate to participate in the PSC’s program.

How does an agency nominate to participate?

A letter and nomination form has been sent to each Director-General, with copies to HR Directors.  In nominating, agencies will need to identify a Senior Executive and member of the HR team to lead the 16 week program in their agency.  Further to this, agencies are asked to articulate the strategic drivers that will be supported through this focus on optimising the use of the selected flexible work options.

How and when will the program commence?

The Public Service Commission will host the launch of the Flexible Workplace Program — Supported Implementation in August 2009, with the Senior Executives and HR team members from nominating government agencies.  At this interactive forum, further details of the program and its structure will be communicated.
