In the Response to Integrity and Accountability in Queensland paper the Queensland Government committed to adopting a single code of conduct for public servants. A single Code focuses on clarity and the positive expression of public sector values, as well as ensuring consistent standards, enhancing accessibility and achieving a greater awareness of values that underpin the public service.
The Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service was developed in line with the government’s commitment and in consultation with agencies, employees and industrial representatives. The Code was designed to be relevant for all public sector agencies and their employees and reflects the amended ethics principles and values contained in the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994.
The standards of conduct contained in the Code help employees to put into practice the ethics principles and values, but are not intended to cover every possible scenario. Employees are expected to uphold the code by committing to and demonstrating the intent and spirit of the ethics principles and values.
The Code is applicable to employees of public service departments, TAFE institutes or statutory TAFE institutes, administrative offices of a court or tribunal and entities prescribed under regulation. Employees includes volunteers, contractors or anyone who works for a Queensland public service agency.
The Code has been approved by the Premier of Queensland with an effective date of 1 January 2011.
The Department of Transport and Main Road have created an audio version of the Code in MP3 or WAV format.
