The Senior Executive Service (SES) Induction Program provides
information for newly appointed SES officers to support their work performance, continued
learning and professional development in the whole-of-government environment.
The SES Induction Program is designed to complement individual
agencies’ own induction programs by providing information from a service-wide
perspective on the:
- key elements of the broader public service environment in which an executive
leader needs to work to ensure successful performance, including current
whole-of-government initiatives
- the Government’s expectations of the work performance and professional
development of SES officers, and
- legislative frameworks and other accountability imperatives for an SES
officer.
By “joining up” new SES officers from across agencies, the induction
program fosters productive networking opportunities with an emphasis on collaborative
effort to integrate senior executive leadership capability, policy development,
futures planning, resource deployment and service delivery activities across
the public service.
Objectives
The SES Induction Program contributes to the development of the Senior Executive
Service. The program is designed to:
- provide strategic and lateral perspectives in the achievement of government
priorities through collaborative effort
- foster a service-wide, professional leadership identity which is strongly
focussed on the achievements of outcomes
- encourage a work ethic of continued professional development and executive
leadership mobility as a rewarding career goal
- ensure that achievement of departmental business outcomes supports whole-of-government
outcomes through executive performance and development frameworks
- provide a unique opportunity to develop vital working relationships,
behaviours and productive networks and partnerships with other executives
and stakeholders and
- improve the performance and value-add capability for officers within
the SES.
Benefits
Participation in the program offers SES officers and their agencies valuable benefits that
will enhance SES officers’ performance and their satisfaction with their SES career,
and in turn ensure that the SES is well positioned to deliver excellence
in government services and outcomes now and in the future.
- build valuable networks with their counterparts from other agencies that
will promote collaboration and facilitate a whole-of-government approach
- actively lead on whole-of-government issues
- enrich the capability of the individual SES officer to achieve critical
agency outcomes
- develop a broad range of knowledge, skills, relevant abilities and awareness
across the public sector
- develop a leadership network with other senior executives across the
public service
- develop a shared identity and culture as members of the SES
- promote the importance of executive development in their leadership capability
- appreciate their connection with and value to the Government, thereby
